Applicable Scriptures

I pray that you would be filled with wisdom and spiritual understanding (spiritual and mental intelligence combined) and increase in the correct knowledge of God. / Col 1:9-10

  • Death and life are in the power of the tongue, and they who indulge in it shall eat the fruit of it [for death or life]. / Proverbs 18:21 (AMPC)
  • Let no foul or polluting language, nor evil word nor unwholesome or worthless talk [ever] come out of your mouth, but only such [speech] as is good and beneficial to the spiritual progress of others, as is fitting to the need and the occasion, that it may be a blessing and give grace (God’s favor) to those who hear it. / Ephesians 4:29 (AMP)
  • …on the day of judgment, men will have to give account for every idle (inoperative, nonworking) word we speak. For by your words you will be justified and acquitted, and by your words you will be condemned and sentenced. / Matthew 12:36b (AMP)
  • It’s your heart, not the dictionary that gives meaning to your words. A good person produces good deeds and words season after season. An evil person is a blight on the orchard. Let me tell you something: Every one of these careless words is going to come back to haunt you. There will be a time of Reckoning. Words are powerful; take them seriously. Words can be your salvation. Words can also be your damnation. / Matthew 12:36b-37 (MSG)
  • Keep vigilant watch over your heart; that’s where life starts. Don’t talk out of both sides of your mouth; avoid careless banter, white lies, and gossip. Keep your eyes straight ahead; ignore all sideshow distractions. Watch your step, and the road will stretch out smooth before you. Look neither right nor left… / Proverbs 4:23 (MSG)
  • A perverse man sows strife, and a whisperer separates close friends. / Proverbs 16:28 (NKJV)
  • The words of a whisperer or slanderer are like dainty morsels or words of sport [to some, but to others are like deadly wounds]; and they go down into the innermost parts of the body [or of the victim’s nature]. / Proverbs 26:22 (AMPC)
  • He who goes about as a gossip reveals secrets; Therefore do not associate with a gossip [who talks freely or flatters]. / Proverbs 20:19 (AMP)
  • Put away from you a deceitful (lying, misleading) mouth, And put devious lips far from you. / Proverbs 4:24 (AMP)
  • A man’s stomach will be satisfied with the fruit of his mouth; He will be satisfied with the consequence of his words. / Proverbs 18:20 (AMP)
  • Where there is no wood, the fire goes out; And where there is no talebearer, strife ceases. / Proverbs 26:20 (NKJV)
  • It only takes a spark, remember, to set off a forest fire. A careless or wrongly placed word out of your mouth can do that. By our speech we can ruin the world, turn harmony to chaos, throw mud on a reputation, send the whole world up in smoke and go up in smoke with it, smoke right from the pit of hell. / James 3:6 (MSG)
  • Keep your tongue from evil and your lips from speaking deceit. / Psalm 34:13 (NKJV)
  • Why do you brag of evil, “Big Man”? God’s mercy carries the day. You scheme catastrophe; your tongue cuts razor-sharp, artisan in lies. You love evil more than good, you call black white. You love malicious gossip, you foul-mouth. / Psalm 52:4 (MSG)
  • The one who wants to enjoy life and see good days [good—whether apparent or not], Must keep his tongue free from evil and his lips from speaking guile (treachery, deceit). / 1 Peter 3:10 (AMP)
  • Observe the people who always talk before they think—even simpletons are better off than they are. / Proverbs 29:20 (MSG)
  • For their heart devises violence, And their lips talk of troublemaking. / Proverbs 24:2 (NKJV)
  • avoid all empty (vain, useless, idle) talk, for it will lead people into more and more ungodliness. / 2 Timothy 2:16 (AMPC)
  • When a leader listens to malicious gossip, all the workers get infected with evil. / Prov 29:12 (MSG)
  • Put away from you false and dishonest speech, and willful and contrary talk put far from you. / Proverbs 4:24 (AMPC)
  • …And now here’s what I want you to do: Tell the truth, the whole truth, when you speak. Do the right thing by one another, both personally and in your courts. Don’t cook up plans to take unfair advantage of others. Don’t do or say what isn’t so…. / Zechariah 8:16-17 (MSG)
  • “Not only that—count yourselves blessed every time people put you down or throw you out or speak lies about you to discredit me. What it means is that the truth is too close for comfort and they are uncomfortable. You can be glad when that happens—give a cheer, even!—for though they don’t like it, I do! And all heaven applauds. And know that you are in good company. My prophets and witnesses have always gotten into this kind of trouble. / Matthew 5:11-12 (MSG)
  • What this adds up to, then, is this: no more lies, no more pretense. Tell your neighbor the truth. In Christ’s body we’re all connected to each other, after all. When you lie to others, you end up lying to yourself. / Ephesians 4:25 (MSG)
  • These six things the Lord hates, indeed, seven are an abomination to Him: A proud look [the spirit that makes one overestimate himself and underestimate others], a lying tongue, and hands that shed innocent blood, A heart that manufactures wicked thoughts and plans, feet that are swift in running to evil, A false witness who breathes out lies [even under oath], and he who sows discord among his brethren… / Proverbs 6:16-20 (AMP)
  • The person who tells lies gets caught; the person who spreads rumors is ruined. / Proverbs 19:9 (MSG)
  • Anyone who tells lies against the neighbors in court or on the street is a loose cannon. / Proverbs 25:18 (MSG)

  • In a multitude of words transgression is not lacking, but he who restrains his lips is prudent. / Proverbs 10:19 (AMPC)
  • A [self-confident] fool’s lips bring contention, and his mouth invites a beating. A [self-confident] fool’s mouth is his ruin, and his lips are a snare to himself. The words of a whisperer or talebearer are as dainty morsels; they go down into the innermost parts of the body. / Proverbs 18:6-8 (AMPC)
  • Troublemakers start fights; gossips break up friendships. / Proverbs 16:28 (MSG)
  • Pleasant words are as a honeycomb, sweet to the mind and healing to the body. / Proverbs 16:24 (AMPC)
